Adoption & Care Process
1
Choose Adoption vs Purchase
- Rescue adoption: Free/low cost, saves a life, mixed breeds available
- Pet shop: Breed-specific, health guaranteed, higher cost
- Online/Facebook: Use caution — verify seller credentials
- Consider adult pets — they're calmer and often house-trained
2
Prepare Your Home
- Check condo pet policy — many allow small pets under 7kg
- Pet-proof balconies and windows (high-rise safety)
- Buy basics: bed, bowls, leash, food, litter box (cats)
- Find nearest vet clinic — register before adoption
3
Medical Requirements
- Rabies vaccination (mandatory in Thailand)
- Core vaccines: distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis
- Spay/neuter — many shelters do this pre-adoption
- Microchip implantation (required for international travel)
- Monthly heartworm and tick prevention (essential in tropical climate)
4
Registration & Legal
- Register pet with local DLD office (Department of Livestock Development)
- Keep vaccination booklet updated
- If renting: get written pet permission from landlord
- Consider pet insurance (฿3,000–8,000/year)
5
Daily Care in Pattaya
- Provide fresh water constantly — dehydration risk in tropical heat
- Walk early morning or evening — avoid midday heat
- Use tick/flea prevention year-round (tropical parasites are aggressive)
- Find a reliable pet sitter for travel — boarding from ฿300/day
- Join 'Pattaya Pet Owners' Facebook group for community support
Important Tips
Tropical climate means year-round tick, flea, and heartworm risk. Monthly prevention is NOT optional — it's essential.
If you plan to leave Thailand with your pet, start the export paperwork 4+ months ahead. Blood titer tests take 3 months minimum.
Adopt, don't shop. Thousands of healthy, loving dogs and cats need homes. Street rescues are often the most loyal companions.
