    Requirements

    International Driving Permit (IDP)

Required for all foreign drivers. Must be obtained BEFORE arriving in Thailand from your home country's licensing authority.

    Valid passport

Original passport required. Some agencies accept a copy with the IDP.

    Credit card

Most agencies require a credit card for the deposit hold. Some local shops accept cash deposit.

    Minimum age

Usually 21 years old. Some luxury cars require 25+. Under 25 may incur a young driver surcharge.

    Insurance

Basic third-party insurance (Por Ror Bor) is mandatory. Comprehensive CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) highly recommended.

    Driving Tips

    • Thailand drives on the LEFT — take extra care at roundabouts and turns
    • Tolls on motorways accept cash or Easy Pass — keep small bills handy
    • U-turns are frequent on Thai roads — follow signs, don't cross barriers
    • Parking in Pattaya: most malls offer free parking, street parking is hit-or-miss
    • Speed cameras are common on Highway 7 (Bangkok–Pattaya motorway)
    • Fuel is cheap: ~35 baht/liter for gasoline, ~30 for diesel (2026 prices)
    • Don't park on red-white painted curbs — your car will be towed or clamped
    • Drive defensively — motorbikes will appear from every direction
