Drinking Water Costs — 15–30 THB per 20L
Standard 20-liter refill bottles (blue gallon jugs) cost 15–20 THB delivered to your door. Premium filtered/mineral water: 25–35 THB per 20L. Small bottles (600ml) from 7-Eleven: 7–10 THB. 1.5L bottles: 12–20 THB. Monthly spending on drinking water: 200–600 THB for a single person. Water dispensers (hot and cold) cost 2,000–5,000 THB to purchase. Many condos have filtered water dispensers in common areas — free or 1 THB/liter.
Delivery Providers
Sprinkle, Crystal, Nestle Pure Life, and Singha are the major bottled water brands with delivery services. Local water stations (look for blue signs with water droplet logos) deliver 20L jugs and refills — cheaper than brand names. Most deliver same-day or next-day. Minimum orders are typically 2–5 jugs. Some providers offer a water dispenser on loan when you commit to regular delivery. LINE and phone ordering are the most common methods.
Tap Water Safety
Tap water in Pattaya is NOT recommended for drinking. While treated at the plant, aging pipes can introduce contaminants. Safe for: showering, brushing teeth (most people use it), and washing dishes. NOT safe for: drinking directly, making ice cubes, or cooking without boiling first. Boiling tap water for 3+ minutes makes it safe. Most locals and expats drink bottled or filtered water exclusively. Some condos have building-level filtration — ask your management.
Water Filtration Systems
Under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) systems: 3,000–8,000 THB installed. Countertop filters: 1,000–3,000 THB. Gravity-fed filters (like Berkey): 3,000–6,000 THB. RO systems produce the purest water — ideal for long-term residents. Filter replacement: every 6–12 months, 500–1,500 THB per change. Most hardware stores and Lazada sell filtration systems. Installation usually included with purchase. A home RO system pays for itself within 6–12 months vs bottled water.
Condo Water Dispensers
Many condos have coin-operated water dispensers in common areas — 1 THB per liter, reliable quality. Some upscale condos provide free filtered water. The dispensers use RO filtration. Bring your own container — 5L or 20L jugs work best. These machines are maintained by the building management and filters are changed regularly. This is the cheapest option for drinking water if your building has it.
Water Utility (Tap Water)
Tap water bills are cheap — 100–400 THB/month for normal residential use. Water is billed by the cubic meter. Provincial Waterworks Authority rate: approximately 15–18 THB per cubic meter. Condo buildings may mark up to 25–35 THB per cubic meter. Water pressure varies — some areas have low pressure during peak evening hours. Water bills are separate from electricity bills. Paid at the waterworks office, 7-Eleven, or to condo management.
Water Quality Concerns
Pattaya's water supply comes from local reservoirs — quality varies by season. Rainy season can increase sediment. Dry season can reduce pressure and quality in some areas. Some neighborhoods have older pipes that may add rust or sediment. If your tap water appears yellow or cloudy, report to the waterworks authority. Shower filters (300–800 THB) can remove chlorine and improve skin/hair health. Water testing kits available online for 200–500 THB.
Installing a Water Filter
For renters: countertop or gravity filters require no plumbing modifications. Under-sink RO systems need a small hole in the countertop for the faucet — ask your landlord's permission. Shower filters screw onto standard shower heads. Whole-house filters (3,000–10,000 THB) install at the main water inlet — best for houses. Plumbers can install systems for 300–800 THB labor. Filter cartridges available at HomePro, Global House, and Lazada.
Water Refill Stations
Coin-operated water refill machines are found at many locations — outside 7-Elevens, gas stations, and in neighborhoods. Typically 1 THB per liter using RO filtration. Bring your own container. Quality varies by machine maintenance — choose machines that look clean and well-maintained. Some machines also offer alkaline and mineral water options at slightly higher prices. These are the cheapest option after condo dispensers.
Staying Hydrated in Pattaya
In Pattaya's tropical climate, you need 2.5–4 liters of water daily — more if exercising or drinking alcohol. Signs of dehydration: dark urine, headache, fatigue, dizziness. Carry a reusable water bottle (300–500 THB for insulated models). Ice in restaurants is generally safe — commercial ice is made from filtered water. Coconut water is an excellent natural hydrator (20–40 THB). Electrolyte powders (30–50 THB/packet) help replace salts lost through sweating.
Emergency Water Supply
Keep 2–3 days of drinking water stored in case of supply interruption. During extended outages, convenience stores may sell out — stock up early. Water delivery services continue during most outages. Large plastic water containers (20L) cost 50–100 THB at hardware stores. Some condos have rooftop water tanks that provide a buffer during supply cuts.
