Songkran Dates & Schedule — April 13–15 (Extended in Pattaya)
Official Songkran: April 13–15 nationwide. But Pattaya celebrates 'Wan Lai' on April 18–19, extending the festival to nearly a full week of water fights. April 13: Wan Sangkhan Lohng (preparation day, parties start). April 14: Wan Nao (family day, temple visits, water fights begin). April 15: Wan Songkran (main celebration, biggest water fights). April 18–19: Pattaya's Wan Lai (the city's official late celebration on Beach Road and Second Road — massive events). Book accommodation 3–4 weeks ahead — Songkran is peak season with 30–50% price increases.
Water Guns & Equipment
Water guns are sold everywhere in Pattaya starting early April: 7-Eleven, Big C, and street vendors. Budget plastic guns: 50–150 THB. Mid-range pump-action: 200–500 THB. High-capacity backpack water guns: 500–1,200 THB (worth it for serious players). Ice water is commonly thrown — expect it. Many locals use garden hoses, buckets, and even fire trucks. Pro tip: buy your water gun 2–3 days before April 13 when selection is best and prices haven't peaked. Powder paste (din sor pong) is applied to faces — messy but part of the tradition.
Waterproof Phone Case — Non-Negotiable
Your phone WILL get soaked during Songkran — guaranteed. Buy a waterproof pouch (100–300 THB at 7-Eleven, night markets, or Lazada). IP68 rated pouches allow full touchscreen use and underwater photography. Test the pouch in your sink before going out — cheap pouches sometimes leak. For photography, waterproof pouches with clear backs work well. GoPro or similar action cameras (rent for 500–1,000 THB/day) are ideal for Songkran content. Keep your wallet in a ziplock bag inside a waterproof pouch. Leave valuables at the hotel.
Sunscreen — Apply Heavily, Reapply Often
Songkran falls during Thailand's hottest month (April, 35–40°C). You'll be outside in direct sun for hours while water evaporates off your skin, accelerating sunburn. Apply SPF 50+ water-resistant sunscreen 30 minutes before going out. Reapply every 60–90 minutes — water constantly washes it off. Biore UV Aqua Rich (250–400 THB at 7-Eleven/Watsons) is excellent and popular. Don't forget: back of neck, ears, tops of feet, and shoulders. Sunburn during Songkran is the most common tourist medical complaint.
Where to Go — Best Songkran Spots
Beach Road (central section): biggest party zone with stages, DJs, foam machines, and thousands of people. Soi 7 & Soi 8: intense water fights with bars and music. Walking Street: opens early for Songkran, massive water battles. Jomtien Beach Road: mellower but still fun, good for families. Naklua: most traditional celebrations with temple activities. Wan Lai (April 18–19): Beach Road from North Pattaya to Walking Street becomes a 4 km water war zone with concert stages. Central Festival hosts organized events with international DJs.
Where to Avoid & Safety Zones
Avoid Sukhumvit Road during peak hours — traffic is chaotic with water-throwing from pickup trucks. Avoid motorbike travel during Songkran — wet roads plus water in eyes equals accidents (Songkran has Thailand's highest road fatality rate). Walking Street gets extremely packed after 8 PM — claustrophobic crowds. For a break from water: malls (Central Pattaya, Terminal 21) are dry safe zones. Hotel pools are peaceful alternatives. Restaurants inside shopping centers are oases. Some roads are closed to traffic during main celebrations.
Safety Tips
Wear quick-dry clothes (no white for women — it becomes transparent). Protect your ears — water guns at close range can damage eardrums (consider silicone earplugs, 50 THB). Wear waterproof shoes with good grip (wet roads are slippery). Drink water constantly — dehydration is a serious risk in 38°C+ heat while being active. Avoid ice water in the eyes — it stings and can cause eye infections. Never throw water at monks, elderly people clearly not participating, or people on motorbikes in traffic. Respect 'no water' zones near temples and hospitals.
Cultural Meaning Behind Songkran
Songkran is Thai New Year, rooted in Buddhist tradition. Water represents purification and washing away the old year's sins. The gentle pouring of water on Buddha images and elders' hands (rod nam dam hua) is the traditional practice — the water fight evolved from this. On April 13, families visit temples to make merit and pour water on Buddha statues. Younger family members pour scented water on elders' hands as a sign of respect. Understanding the cultural meaning will be appreciated by Thai people — it's not just a water fight.
Transportation During Songkran
Expect major disruptions. Many roads in central Pattaya are closed April 13–15 and April 18–19. Baht buses reduce service and charge 2–3x normal rates (40–100 THB). Grab/Bolt surge pricing: 2–5x normal (a 100 THB trip becomes 300–500 THB). Walking is often the best option in central areas — embrace getting wet. If you must drive, expect gridlock and water thrown at your vehicle. Motorcycle taxis are available but risky (slippery roads). Book airport transfers well in advance — don't rely on on-demand transport.
Nightlife During Songkran
Songkran transforms Pattaya's nightlife into an extended outdoor festival. Beach Road hosts major stages with Thai and international DJs. Walking Street opens earlier (4 PM) with foam parties and water events. Soi 6, 7, and 8 have bar-hosted water fights and parties. Cover charges increase: 200–500 THB at popular venues (usually includes 1–2 drinks). Drink prices rise 20–30%. After-hours parties run until sunrise. Dress code is relaxed — everyone's in swimwear and water gear. This is arguably Pattaya's most festive period of the year.
Photography & Content Tips
Songkran is incredibly photogenic. Best times for photos: morning (9–11 AM) before the chaos peaks, and golden hour (5–6 PM) with dramatic light through water spray. Shoot from elevated positions — hotel balconies, restaurant terraces — for crowd shots. GoPro/action cameras handle water better than phones. For phone photography, use burst mode to capture action. The powder paste (white/colored) on faces makes for amazing portraits. Ask before taking close-up portraits — most people are happy to pose. Back up photos to cloud nightly.
