Act Immediately — First 30 Minutes
If you've been scammed, time is critical. If it involved your bank card, call your bank NOW to freeze the card. Note down every detail — time, location, descriptions of people, amounts, any receipts or screenshots. Don't delete any messages or chat history with the scammer.
Bank Card & Financial Scams
Call your bank's international emergency line to freeze cards and dispute charges. Most banks have 60–120 day chargeback windows. For credit cards, file a dispute immediately — Visa and Mastercard have strong buyer protection. Screenshot all transactions. Thai bank transfers are harder to reverse but not impossible with a police report.
Contact Tourist Police — 1155
Thailand's Tourist Police (1155, available 24/7) speak English and handle tourist scam cases regularly. They're more effective than regular police for these situations. The Pattaya Tourist Police office is on Soi 9, Beach Road. They can accompany you to file a police report and mediate with Thai businesses.
File a Police Report
A police report (ใบแจ้งความ) is essential for insurance claims and bank disputes. Go to Pattaya Police Station or Tourist Police with all evidence. Reports are free and take 30–60 minutes. Insist on an English translation. Get multiple certified copies — you'll need them for insurance and your bank.
Jet Ski Scam — What to Do
The infamous jet ski damage scam: operators claim you damaged the jet ski and demand 10,000–50,000 THB. NEVER pay on the spot. Call Tourist Police (1155) immediately. Take photos and video of the jet ski before and after. Most legitimate damage claims are 2,000–5,000 THB maximum. Tourist Police regularly deal with these and can negotiate.
Bar Bill Padding & Drink Scams
Inflated bar bills are common in some Walking Street venues. Always check prices before ordering. If presented with an outrageous bill, stay calm, dispute specific items, and call Tourist Police if needed. Never hand over your credit card — pay cash. Legitimate bars have printed menus with prices.
Romance & Online Scams
Romance scams range from short-term bar scams to long-term schemes requesting money for 'emergencies.' Never send money to someone you've recently met. Be wary of sob stories about sick family members, land purchases, or business investments. If you've already sent money, file a police report and contact your bank.
Taxi & Transport Overcharging
Taxis refusing meters or demanding flat rates of 500+ THB for short trips. Always insist on the meter or agree on a price beforehand. Use Grab or Bolt apps for transparent pricing. Songthaew (shared truck) rides should be 10–20 THB on fixed routes. If overcharged, note the taxi number and report to 1584 (DLT hotline).
Rental Scams — Motorbikes & Jet Skis
Rental operators claiming pre-existing damage to charge you. ALWAYS take date-stamped photos and video of the vehicle from every angle before renting. Use Google Maps timeline to prove your location. Never leave your passport as deposit — leave a photocopy and cash deposit of 2,000–5,000 THB maximum.
Legal Options & Consumer Protection
Thailand's Office of Consumer Protection Board (OCPB) handles complaints at 1166. For amounts over 50,000 THB, consider consulting a Thai lawyer — initial consultations cost 1,000–3,000 THB. Small claims court handles cases up to 300,000 THB without a lawyer. The process takes 1–3 months.
Travel Insurance Claims
Most travel insurance covers theft and fraud. File your claim within 24–48 hours of the incident. You'll need: police report, evidence of loss (receipts, bank statements), photos, and a written statement. Keep all original documents. Common payout limits are USD $500–2,000 for theft/fraud per incident.
Report Online — Protect Others
Report scams to: Thai Police Cyber Crime Division (1599), your country's embassy, TripAdvisor and Google reviews (name the business), and Facebook expat groups (Pattaya Expats Club, Pattaya Addicts). Your report helps protect future visitors. Screenshot everything before businesses can delete evidence.
