Flooding Season — October to November
Pattaya's worst flooding typically occurs mid-October through late November. Low-lying areas like South Pattaya (especially around Soi Buakhao and Walking Street), parts of Sukhumvit Road near Tesco Lotus, and Naklua Soi 18 flood regularly. Water can rise 30–80 cm in severe events. Flash floods happen rapidly — heavy rain for 2–3 hours can flood streets. Avoid driving through floodwater; it hides open manholes and debris. Baht buses and motorbike taxis often stop operating during severe flooding.
Tropical Storms & Monsoon Winds
Thailand's eastern seaboard (including Pattaya) faces the southwest monsoon May–October. Tropical storms can bring sustained winds of 60–90 km/h with gusts up to 120 km/h during severe events. The Gulf of Thailand becomes rough July–November with waves up to 3–4 meters. Ferry services to Koh Larn suspend during storms. Secure balcony items, close windows, and avoid the beach during storm warnings. Most storm damage in Pattaya involves fallen trees, signage, and power lines.
Earthquake Risk — Minimal but Not Zero
Pattaya sits far from major fault lines. Earthquake risk is very low but not absent. Tremors from distant quakes in Myanmar, Laos, or Sumatra can occasionally be felt — typically 2.0–3.5 on the Richter scale in Pattaya, enough to rattle windows but not cause damage. No special earthquake preparation is needed beyond general awareness. High-rise condo buildings in Pattaya are built to Thai seismic codes. The last significant tremor felt in Pattaya was from a 6.1 event in Myanmar.
Emergency Numbers & Alerts
National Disaster Warning Center: 1860. Emergency (general): 1669. Fire Department: 199. Tourist Police: 1155. Pattaya City Call Center: 1337. Download the Thai Disaster Alert app (กรมป้องกันและบรรเทาสาธารณภัย) for push notifications. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) posts weather warnings on tmd.go.th. Local LINE groups and Facebook groups (Pattaya Expats, Pattaya News) share real-time flooding updates faster than official channels.
Water Preparation & Storage
During severe flooding, tap water may become contaminated. Store at least 20 liters of drinking water per person (about 4 large bottles from 7-Eleven at 15–20 THB each). Keep water purification tablets as backup (available at pharmacies, 50–100 THB). Water delivery services (Sprinkle, Crystal) may be delayed 2–3 days after major flooding. Fill your bathtub for non-drinking water needs. Water filters (e.g., Mitsubishi Cleansui, 800–2,000 THB at HomePro) are a good long-term investment.
Food & Supply Preparation
Stock 3–5 days of non-perishable food: instant noodles, canned fish, crackers, dried fruit, and nuts. 7-Eleven and Family Mart shelves empty quickly before announced storms. Buy supplies 2–3 days ahead of forecast events. Essential items: flashlights (LED, 100–300 THB), batteries, basic first aid kit (200–500 THB at Boots/Watsons), waterproof bags for documents (50 THB at Daiso), and a portable phone charger (power bank, 500–1,500 THB). Keep cash on hand — ATMs may go offline.
Power Outages & Electrical Safety
Power outages during storms last 1–6 hours typically, but can extend to 24+ hours in severe flooding. PEA (Provincial Electricity Authority) reports outages at 1129. Never touch downed power lines or flooded electrical panels. Unplug appliances during storms to prevent surge damage. A UPS (uninterruptible power supply, 1,500–4,000 THB at IT City or Lazada) protects computers and routers. Portable generators are available for rent at 500–1,000 THB/day from hardware shops on Sukhumvit.
Protecting Your Home or Condo
For ground-floor units: elevate electronics, documents, and valuables above expected flood levels. Sandbags are distributed free by Pattaya City Hall before major flooding events (call 1337). Waterproof your important documents — passport, work permit, lease — in ziplock bags. For condo dwellers above floor 3, flooding is rarely a direct threat, but power and water supply interruptions affect everyone. Check your building's emergency generator capacity with management.
Evacuation Routes & Shelters
Pattaya's evacuation shelters are typically schools and government buildings — Pattaya City Hall, local Wat temples, and larger shopping malls (Central Pattaya, Terminal 21) serve as informal shelters. Head to higher ground in Pratumnak Hill area during severe flooding. Avoid underpasses on Sukhumvit — they flood first and deepest. Keep your car fuel tank at least half full during storm season. Know your nearest hospital: Bangkok Hospital Pattaya (North), Pattaya Memorial (Central), Phyathai Sriracha (North).
Heat Waves & Extreme Heat (March–May)
While not a 'disaster,' extreme heat is a genuine health risk. Temperatures reach 38–42°C in April with humidity above 70%, creating dangerous heat index levels above 50°C. Heatstroke hospitalizations spike during Songkran. Drink 3–4 liters of water daily minimum. Electrolyte packets (ORS, 5–15 THB at pharmacies) prevent dehydration better than water alone. Avoid outdoor activity 11 AM–3 PM. Air conditioning is not a luxury — it's a health necessity April–May.
Communication During Emergencies
Mobile networks can become congested during major events. Have backup communication: download offline maps (Google Maps/Maps.me), save emergency contacts locally (not just in cloud). LINE app is Thailand's primary messaging platform — join your condo/village LINE group for real-time updates. Local FM radio 107.75 MHz broadcasts Pattaya emergency updates in Thai. Consider a prepaid second SIM card on a different network (AIS vs True vs DTAC) for redundancy.
Insurance & Preparation Checklist
Ensure your health insurance covers natural disaster injuries. Renter's or homeowner's insurance (3,000–8,000 THB/year) covers flood damage to belongings. Photograph all valuables and serial numbers — store photos in cloud. Keep digital copies of all important documents (passport, insurance, lease) in email and cloud storage. Review your condo building's insurance coverage with management. Preparation is especially important for long-term residents and digital nomads with expensive equipment.
