Local vs Tourist Prices in Pattaya
Side-by-side comparison of what locals pay versus what tourists get charged — and how to pay the local rate every time.
Pad Thai: 40 THB vs 120 THB
Local price at a street stall in a residential soi: 40–60 THB for a generous plate. Tourist price on Walking Street or Beach Road: 100–150 THB for the same dish, sometimes smaller. The secret: walk 2 blocks away from any tourist landmark and prices drop 50%. Soi Buakhao and Naklua sois have excellent Pad Thai at local prices.
Songthaew Ride: 10 THB vs 50 THB
The shared blue songthaew on fixed routes costs 10 THB per person — just hop on and press the bell. Tourists who don't know this get quoted 50–100 THB by drivers who offer 'special trips'. The 10 THB route runs the full Beach Road–Second Road loop and along Jomtien. Only negotiate a price if going off-route.
Men's Haircut: 100 THB vs 400 THB
A Thai barbershop in a local soi charges 80–120 THB for a standard cut. Tourist-area salons charge 300–500 THB for the identical service. Women's cuts range from 150–250 THB locally vs 500–1,000 THB in tourist zones. The quality is often identical — local barbers have been cutting hair for decades.
Thai Massage: 200 THB vs 500 THB
A one-hour Thai massage on a quiet soi in Naklua or East Pattaya costs 200–250 THB. The same massage on Beach Road or Walking Street costs 400–600 THB. Oil massage follows the same pattern: 250–300 THB locally vs 500–800 THB in tourist areas. Quality varies by therapist, not location. Ask expats for their favorite spots.
Beer (Large Bottle): 55 THB vs 120 THB
A large Chang or Leo at a local Thai restaurant: 55–70 THB. The same beer on Walking Street: 100–150 THB. Soi Buakhao bars: 60–80 THB. 7-Eleven: 45–60 THB. Happy hour deals on Soi Buakhao offer 49–59 THB large beers. Craft beer is 150–250 THB everywhere. The biggest markup is in go-go bars: 150–250 THB for a basic beer.
Som Tam (Papaya Salad): 40 THB vs 100 THB
Street vendors and local Isaan restaurants serve som tam for 35–50 THB. Tourist restaurants charge 80–120 THB. The local version is often better — made to order with the level of spice you request. Look for the wooden mortar and pestle being pounded — that's authentic. Market food courts are another great local-price option.
Fresh Fruit: 20 THB vs 60 THB
A bag of sliced mango, pineapple, or watermelon from a market vendor: 20–30 THB. From a tourist-area fruit cart: 50–80 THB. Whole fruits at local markets (Naklua, Soi Buakhao morning market): mangoes 30–60 THB/kg, pineapple 20–30 THB, dragonfruit 40–60 THB/kg. Supermarket prices fall between local and tourist pricing.
Gym Day Pass: 150 THB vs 400 THB
Local Thai gyms charge 100–200 THB for a day pass, 1,500–2,500 THB monthly. Tourist-oriented gyms and hotel fitness centers charge 300–500 THB per day. Monthly memberships at mid-range gyms run 1,500–3,000 THB. Premium gyms like Tony's Fitness or Jomtien chains charge 2,500–4,000 THB monthly but include great equipment.
Basic Clinic Visit: 300 THB vs 1,500 THB
A local Thai clinic (non-hospital) charges 200–400 THB for a basic consultation including medication. International hospitals charge 1,000–2,000 THB for the same visit. Pharmacies sell many medications over-the-counter for 20–100 THB that would require a prescription and doctor visit in Western countries. For serious issues, hospitals are worth the premium.
Monthly Condo Rent: 6,000 vs 15,000 THB
A basic studio condo in East Pattaya or outer Jomtien rents for 5,000–8,000 THB to long-term tenants. The same unit on a tourist rental site: 12,000–20,000 THB. One-bedrooms range from 8,000–12,000 THB locally vs 15,000–25,000 THB short-term. Direct deals via Thai-language Facebook groups or walk-in inquiries get the best rates.
Laundry: 30 THB/kg vs 80 THB/kg
Local laundry shops charge 30–40 THB per kg with next-day pickup. Tourist-area laundry services charge 60–100 THB per kg or per item. Hotel laundry is the most expensive at 100–300 THB per item. For best value, use the small shophouses with laundry signs — they're everywhere. Some offer same-day service for a small premium.
SIM Card: 200 THB vs 600 THB
A tourist SIM from 7-Eleven or a carrier shop costs 200–400 THB for 15–30 days with generous data. Airport kiosks and hotel desks charge 500–800 THB for similar plans. AIS, TrueMove, and DTAC all have competitive tourist packages. Buy at 7-Eleven or a brand store — never from a random street vendor or tout.
