7-Eleven
Ubiquitous convenience store. Thailand has 14,000+ locations. Open 24/7. Bills, top-ups, food, ATM.
Baht
Thai currency. 1 USD ≈ 34 THB (2026). Coins: 1, 2, 5, 10. Bills: 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000.
Baht Bus
Converted pickup trucks that serve as shared taxis in Pattaya. 10 baht for standard routes.
Bolt
Ride-hailing app, competitor to Grab. Often cheaper. Available in Pattaya for cars and motorbikes.
Farang
Thai word for a Western foreigner. Not derogatory — used casually and officially.
Grab
Southeast Asia's ride-hailing app (like Uber). Cars and motorbike taxis. Also food delivery (GrabFood).
Isaan
Northeastern Thailand region. Known for spicy food (som tam, laab). Many Pattaya residents are from Isaan.
Jai Yen
Cool heart — keep calm. Essential Thai concept. Losing your temper publicly causes massive loss of face.
Khao
Rice — the foundation of every Thai meal. 'Gin khao' (eat rice) literally means 'to eat a meal.'
Khrap / Kha
Polite particles added to end of sentences. Khrap for males, Kha for females. Essential for politeness.
Koh
Island. Koh Larn, Koh Sak, Koh Phai are popular islands off Pattaya's coast.
Ladyboy
Transgender women. Thailand is relatively accepting. Respectful term in Thai is 'sao praphet song' (สาวประเภทสอง).
Line
Messaging app dominant in Thailand (not WhatsApp). Essential for communicating with Thai businesses and people.
Mai Pen Rai
Never mind / no problem / don't worry. Encapsulates the Thai attitude of letting things go.
Moo
Pork. Moo Ping (grilled pork skewers) is one of the most popular street foods.
Pad Thai
Stir-fried rice noodles with egg, tofu, shrimp, peanuts, and tamarind sauce. Thailand's signature dish.
PromptPay
Thailand's instant payment system. QR code payments accepted almost everywhere. Linked to phone number or ID.
Rot Fai
Train. Pattaya has limited rail service. 'Rot Fai Night Market' is a popular market style across Thailand.
Sanuk
Fun/enjoyment. Core Thai value — if it's not sanuk, it's not worth doing. Influences all aspects of Thai culture.
Sawasdee
Hello / goodbye. Add khrap (M) or kha (F) for politeness. Accompanied by a wai (prayer-like gesture).
Sin Sod
Bride price / dowry paid by groom's family. Amounts vary widely based on bride's education and family status.
Soi
Side street or lane branching off a main road. Pattaya's streets are numbered sois (Soi 1, Soi 2, etc.).
Som Tam
Spicy green papaya salad. Isaan origin. Ranges from mild to extremely hot. Available everywhere.
Songthaew
Literally 'two rows.' Converted pickup with two bench rows. Main public transport in Pattaya.
Sukhumvit
Major highway running through Pattaya (and Bangkok). Main artery connecting north and south Pattaya.
Talat
Market. Day markets, night markets, floating markets — the heart of Thai shopping and street food culture.
Tamboon
Making merit. Donating to temples, monks, or the needy. Central concept in Thai Buddhist practice.
Tom Yum
Spicy and sour soup, usually with shrimp (Tom Yum Goong). One of the world's most famous soups.
TrueMove / AIS / DTAC
Thailand's three major mobile operators. Tourist SIMs available at airports and 7-Eleven stores.
Tuk Tuk
Three-wheeled motorized vehicle used as a taxi. Less common in Pattaya than Bangkok but still found.
Wai
Traditional greeting — palms pressed together near chest with slight bow. Higher hands = more respect.
Walking Street
Pattaya's famous 1km entertainment strip. Bars, clubs, restaurants. Pedestrian-only after 6 PM nightly.
Wat
Buddhist temple. Dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees). Remove shoes before entering buildings.
