Dong Tan Beach Guide
Pine tree-lined, LGBTQ+-friendly, and blissfully calm — Dong Tan is Pattaya's most relaxed beach, tucked between Jomtien and Pratumnak Hill.
Dong Tan Beach Overview
A 1.5 km stretch of sand between Jomtien Beach and Pratumnak Hill. Notably quieter than both neighbors. The beach is lined with distinctive pine trees (casuarina) that provide natural shade — a rarity on Pattaya's beaches. Water is cleaner than central Pattaya. Sun loungers 100 THB/day.
LGBTQ+-Friendly Community
Dong Tan is widely recognized as Pattaya's LGBTQ+-friendly beach. The southern section has long been a welcoming space for the community. Rainbow flags at some beach bars. The atmosphere is inclusive and relaxed — everyone is welcome regardless of orientation. Several LGBTQ+-owned businesses nearby.
Pine Tree-Lined Promenade
The signature feature of Dong Tan is its casuarina pine trees lining the beach road. They provide natural shade and create a Mediterranean-like atmosphere. The paved promenade is perfect for morning walks, jogging, and cycling. One of the most photogenic stretches of coastline in the Pattaya area.
Beachside Dining
Excellent restaurants line the beach road. Thai seafood restaurants with sea views, Western brunch spots, and Italian trattorias. Bruno's Restaurant and Wine Bar is a local institution. Average meal 200–500 THB. Several beach bars serve cocktails during sunset. Quality is higher than tourist-trap areas.
Pratumnak Hill Viewpoints
A 10-minute walk uphill leads to Pratumnak Hill — home to the Big Buddha temple and panoramic viewpoints overlooking Pattaya Bay. Best visited at sunset for stunning photos. The hilltop area has its own restaurants and small expat community. Combine a beach morning with an afternoon hill visit.
Beach Activities
Swimming is good November–February with calm seas and decent clarity. Kayak rental 200–300 THB/hour. Stand-up paddleboarding available at some spots. Beach volleyball courts at the northern end. Less water sports pressure-selling compared to Pattaya Beach. Bring reef shoes for rocky patches.
Photography Spots
The pine tree beach at golden hour is Instagram-worthy. Pratumnak Hill viewpoint offers panoramic bay shots. The Royal Cliff area nearby has dramatic coastal cliffs. Sunrise from the beach is exceptional — Dong Tan faces east-northeast. Several local photographers offer portrait sessions.
Community & Social Scene
Mix of expats, Thai locals, and tourists. Less rowdy than Soi Buakhao or Walking Street crowds. Beach bar happy hours from 4–7 PM are social gathering points. Several fitness groups meet for beach workouts. Weekly social events at various restaurants. A creative, eclectic community.
Accommodation Options
Condos along Pratumnak Road: studios 12,000–20,000 THB/month, one-bedrooms 18,000–30,000 THB. The Cliff, Cosy Beach View, and Unixx are popular buildings. Short-term rentals on Airbnb from 800–1,500 THB/night. Hotels range from budget (800 THB) to luxury (5,000+ THB) at Royal Cliff.
Getting There & Around
Between central Pattaya and Jomtien — accessible by songthaew (10 THB from either direction along the beach road). Grab rides from central Pattaya 60–100 THB. Motorbike parking available along beach road. Walking from Jomtien Beach takes 15–20 minutes along the promenade.
Safety & Comfort
One of the safest beach areas. Well-lit promenade, regular police patrols, and the presence of restaurants means people around at all hours. Petty theft can occur — don't leave valuables unattended on the beach. Jellyfish occasionally appear June–September; vinegar available at some beach shops.
Why Choose Dong Tan
Pick Dong Tan if you want: a quieter beach than Jomtien without the isolation of Na Jomtien, an inclusive community, walkable restaurants and cafes, proximity to Pratumnak Hill, and a generally upscale-casual atmosphere. It's the sweet spot between Pattaya's energy and Jomtien's calm.
