Question 1

Where can I get the best exchange rates?

Accepted Answer

Authorized money changers like SuperRich, Vasu, and K79 offer the best rates. Avoid airport exchanges (worst rates) and street changers. Banks are reliable but rates are average. Compare rates before large exchanges.

Question 2

What are the ATM fees in Thailand?

Accepted Answer

Thai ATMs charge 220 THB per withdrawal for foreign cards. Your home bank may add fees too. Minimize fees by withdrawing maximum amounts (usually 20,000-30,000 THB). Consider cards with no foreign transaction fees.

Question 3

Are credit cards widely accepted?

Accepted Answer

Major hotels, malls, and upscale restaurants accept Visa and Mastercard. Many local businesses are cash-only. Some places add 2-3% surcharge for cards. Always carry cash for markets, street food, and small shops.

Question 4

How much cash should I carry?

Accepted Answer

Carry 1,000-3,000 THB for daily expenses. Keep larger amounts in a secure place or hotel safe. Use a money belt for significant cash. ATMs are widely available, so don't carry more than you need.

Question 5

What money exchange scams should I avoid?

Accepted Answer

Avoid street money changers offering 'special rates'. Count money carefully before leaving. Watch for fake bills—hold them to light to check watermarks. Never exchange in dark or isolated areas. Stick to licensed exchanges.

Question 6

Should I use Wise (TransferWise) or similar services?

Accepted Answer

Wise, Revolut, and similar services often offer better rates than ATMs or exchanges for larger amounts. The Wise debit card has low fees and mid-market rates. Set up before traveling. Combine with a backup card for emergencies.

Question 7

Can tourists open a Thai bank account?

Accepted Answer

Tourists cannot easily open accounts, but long-term visitors with work permits or retirement visas can. Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn are foreigner-friendly. Requirements include passport, visa, proof of address, and sometimes a reference letter. Process takes 1-2 hours.

Question 8

What payment apps work in Pattaya?

Accepted Answer

PromptPay QR codes are everywhere but require a Thai bank account. Some vendors accept Alipay and WeChat Pay. Apple Pay and Google Pay work at major chains. For tourists, cash and cards remain the most practical options.
